And needless to say, we've been 'occupied' with work, house upgrades, chauffeuring Anna, wedding planning, etc. I've been thrilled to have sunlight filled evenings with Z, A & Sasa and we're all healthy and happy.

We went up to the Sleeping Bear Dunes area in northern Michigan to enjoy a long holiday weekend and enjoy it we did. Here's the picture version of the trip:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggktpxcf1iEo6XOQ5jiRfAGdkmN53txQZdY-6fAgMeKpzNuuqXa-N78ZvnKurGlQhVws_3l3AlzvMfKlMO5OM-3IF6u5xGjQosoi71c2yKIL9tyEdMOaC0_O2e-K-MUN8Cyalx0Z6V_is/s400/Z+and+A+on+the+Beach.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356921280273410754" />
Our first night up north hanging out on Lake Michigan's shore at dusk.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAsZc7iWA-rULDJOacmhq1zjQ3IoveTzDiiho36MbwlaisL4pcx6dA1piEHouU2aZGELRbyItaRFvTXZb2lHbSchnYxoeF6XYO4mgAsRi3MppWeF41-Dkz-Cg1Qz1qqRvk1CMInDMfeCI/s400/A+on+Pyramid+Point.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356921457347978738" />
The top of Pyramid Point. it makes it easier to make up the miles. Right now, my goal is to keep a steady 12-15 mpw until I start a training program for fall half marathon. Instead of increasing the miles, I'm focusing on FAST miles. I was really happy about last week and every run felt amazing.

Tue 6/9: 4.5 Miles @ 10:02 pace HR-170 TE-5.0

Thu 6/12: 3.5 Miles @ 8:34 pace HR-174 TE-4.4

Sun 6/14: 4.2 Miles @ 9:36 pace HR-170 TE-4.8

(I've been keeping an excel sheet running log because I'm a dork and like playing around with all the data points. I also make sure that as much as possible I jot down a few notes post workout to note how I felt. If anyone has a favorite way that they track their workouts, I would love to hear about it!)

Another big change in my workouts is that I've abandoned the traditional weight circuit for a workout that emphasizes lower weights (3lbs max) and very high repetitions (50-100 range). It's been about a week of this type of strength training and I really like the results. My muscles are looking leaner rather than bulkier– a little weight training for me and I can get pretty big for my frame.

My original inspiration was from pilates but then I decided to do some desk research about alternative strength training that doesn't bulk up my muscles. Here, I found Tracy Anderson's method. Typically, I shy away from trendy workouts that force me to buy anything (DVD, equipment, memberships, etc) – but here, I just took advantage of her philosophy and found MANY free resources on the web:

Her website: http://tracyandersonmethod.com/

One of her arm workouts featured on self.com: http://www.self.com/fitness/workouts/2008/11/sculpt-a-list-arms-fast#slide=1

Another workout featured on people.com: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI6ucRl_BPw

Another one of her sites: http://www.tracyandersonconnect.com/

Workout featured on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taCiMBFc0sc

One of her workouts with Gwenyth Paltrow: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7xyzw_gwyneth-paltrows-workout-routine_lifestyle

I love strength training but get bored with too much routine. I'm sure I'll constantly find ways to gain strength without bulk – besides, I wouldn't want to show up my fiancé ;) He's hot – he can have the big muscles. J
Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-17856494377755983672009-06-05T10:09:00.006-04:002009-06-05T14:17:33.737-04:00No Go on NYC – Next StepsYesterday, I received the email:

Thank you for applying to run the ING New York City Marathon 2009. Unfortunately, you were not selected in the U.S. lottery drawing. Please understand that we have to limit the size of the field to ensure a top-quality experience, and I hope you get to experience it yourself one day!
That's totally fine. Now, I'm considering the Detroit full or half marathon but I'm going to shelf any ideas until I shake this COLD I'm having in the JUNE! I cashed out of work yesterday at 3pm after fighting an entire morning of the groggies and decided I needed to sleep. Besides, it was difficult for me to get anything done – at least, anything quality.

While I may need to derail a few runs this week, I'm sure it'll be for the best. May was a great month of running for me. I'm really happy that I achieved my goal of getting in 11-12 miles a week, completing at least 1 strength workout a week and finally, kicking some butt on the push-up challenge. To date, I have completed Week 2, Day 3 of the program (4 sets of 12, 13, 10 and 10 respectively) and then maxed out after four sets with 15 good form push-ups. It feels GREAT!Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-83532275975380463462009-05-27T09:56:00.005-04:002009-05-27T10:32:42.862-04:00Memorial-Day WeekendAfter an amazingly sunny and active weekend, I came home after work yesterday and slept for 12 hours. Whoa. I had no idea I was so sleepy but I guess my body was telling me something?

On Saturday, we spent the day in Ann Arbor and enjoyed the farmer's market, walking around downtown and getting mauled by people on the street so they could pet our blonde bombshell, Sasa. Z and I scored a new pair of summer sandals and in general we're all SO PUMPED for the summer. What do you expect? It's cold for 9 months out of the year in the state!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3VxQ52CEBi1iPxNKafz_YOO7Rd6L95h0hcCmfsPL5tB1Tgnt4nErQGGYNjc4SVV4NwefdXAocDJusKHKqzd3rbBmNAtUWr4KxmVk7YVZr1I1T8n0-L0uQzsW4EeqSa8RrGRbdZeMAe90/s400/downsized_0523091410.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340510480196110242" />

Our blond bombshell.

On Sunday, I caught up with one my oldest and dearest friends, Eliza who came over for a bbq. Earlier that day, however, I ran a 6-miler with the pup and Z on his bike and then took a quickie 6 mile bike ride with Z & Anna on the tandem. Liza came over just in time for us to wind down with a couple (maybe a few too many) of coronas. Since she's the closest bridesmaid (the rest are spread across the globe - CA, NY and the Philippines), I got a chance to show her the hideous dresses I expect the four of them to wear - JUST KIDDING!!

Memorial Day consisted of an epic bike ride (epic because Anna did it!) from our place to my parents' place about 9 miles down the road - and then of course, a long break for lunch - yum! Z & I did an out and back while Anna got a lift back home from her Lolo and Lola. We then dove right into some gardening and I literally, spent two hours pulling out and moving out rocks. Yep - previous owner had a rock garden of sorts and we're making them disappear. One rock and at a time. I missed my planned 35 minute cross train yesterday because of late night in the office but I made it up the following day. I'm trying to stick to the trianing plan and force that time into my schedule (:

Monday - Stretch & Strength
30 minutes of Yoga.

Tuesday - 3 Miles
32'15 | 5.0 TE | 166 HR | 10'40
I ran this on the treadmill and maybe because I was tired, it just seemed so...hard.

Wednesday - 30 min XT
MISSED!

Thursday - 2 Miles & Strength
22'14 | 3.8 TE | 167 HR | 11'00
35'00 | Walk along the river trail with Z & Anna on her bike.
Completed half of my circuit training but cut it short 'cause I needed to get into the office.

Friday (today) - OFF

Suunto's Training Effect function on my heart rate monitor is definitely helping me understand my slower than usual miles this week; Last week's long run - for now -- was fast for my current aerobic level.

Of course, at the time, it didn't feel like it at all - it was such a beautiful day and I ran along the river...etc. I really got into a zen-like groove and I didn't feel as thought my heart was working overtime.

Meanwhile, my mid-week runs are often run on a treadmill (for now), since I'm home alone with Anna in the AM and mentally they seem so much harder.

I'm just looking forward to progressing. It feels really good to back into running and I'm happy to take those 'cross training' walks. Still haven't quite gotten used to 'recovery' runs - I usually just go all out apparently, according to my numbers.

Favorite pics from our walk last night:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUIKmL6N7REcqIaM5ktvz25zBUpdH3AUF-eh0B6k-PzWn19vXeKVhNtUhjghHBILtkMz3mbmaHKZv1ATq4jYrMCmWaeo5pDwnnoFOODmTX89IBxxZ6Rxae6Wrj_qIEl0pfTxagWSZB6IE/s320/downsized_0514091856.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336053579951428818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdHTooG3-9kt54IfZzq0TzQRhXSEamNn9RR2v0KWpDWomMQ6vU45SyJMLb5w9JmprQRE1XnP97YNT2ckeWGNsP8_HEljU6LK9cODL8Uyh73i0XsxA6SS6GXw0iEHvulPnmqlhcHjHc3xg/s320/0514091658.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336053579795700786" />Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-43713122128986222292009-05-11T08:45:00.000-04:002009-05-12T13:52:50.851-04:00M-Day Weekend Wrap Up
I had an awesome Mama's Day weekend! Wow – pretty wild weekend, eh?

Z's company treated us to an afternoon at the theatre and afterwards, we ended up tearing apart our front yard attempting some serious landscaping. Surprisingly, it's been so much fun and quite the workout. I'm new to the world of home-owner and apparently, you have to do stuff like this to a certain extent whether you like it or not. Yikes.

On the running front, I'm pleased to report a great Sunday long-run along the river trail. Z & A followed came along with Anna on her new bike and Z encouraging her along. They're so funny together!

Since I haven't already started, I'm posting a wrap up of last week's training plan against my actual workouts. I need to better incorporate a strength regimen into this plan. Oops. Power yoga with Rodney Yee has been amazing – definitely check it out to mitigate soreness, increase flexibility and add a little extra strength training to your program.

Week 3 / 8.5 miles / 2:50:00 hrs

<colgroup><col style='width:91px'/><col style='width:124px'/><col style='width:120px'/><col style='width:48px'/><col style='width:73px'/><col style='width:91px'/><col style='width:91px'/></colgroup>

<td style='padding-left: 7px; It was actually to the point where I considered going to the doctor. The ridiculousness of it all suggested to me that maybe I ought to just change up a few habits – especially since I had just started a new training routine.

Well, ladies and gentleman – it looks like I was drinking too much coffee. I admit it. I'm a coffee junkie.

Instead of quitting cold turkey, I decided to cut back to one cup every morning on my drive into work. Once I was in the office, I switched up my warm-drink-in-hand routine to Rooibos tea. And unsurprisingly, I have felt great all week. I mean, REALLY great – lots of energy and less sarcastic than usual. It's been great!

In keeping with my new found willingness to switch up some potentially bad habits – I've charged myself with drinking 8 glasses of water every day. I just started this new dare today so I'll keep you posted on my progress moving forward. In the meantime, the below stats represent a round-up of my workouts since I started Hal Higdon's 10K training program to get me back into decent aerobic form.

Just to summarize, moving forward I plan on:

Drinking less coffee, more tea (1 cup of coffee max)

8 Glasses of Water Daily

Yoga or stretching routine 1-2 times a week

Strength Routine 2-3 times a week

Weekly Workout Round-Up

Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-15280083404718719702009-05-07T12:40:00.001-04:002009-05-07T12:40:47.012-04:00Memory Lane
It just occurred to me that I didn't run a single race in 2008 – which is fine except that I don't think I did a whole lot of running either. I started a new job, got engaged, and moved to a new house among the many life events and I guess, I didn't quite make the effort to fit it in.

After sifting back through this blog though, I noted the 3 races that I ran in 2007. It was the year I came back to running after Anna was born and I began to have a better school / life balance. Now, in 2009, I'm forging ahead with a better work / life balance. I'm noting these races here so I can aim to improve on them. I'm in the midst of planning a November 2009 wedding and you can imagine that getting in good form for the big day is on the list of To-Dos ;)

I ran each of the races below very casually – it was intimidating coming back to running after such a long time and I'm hoping that this year, I can really focus on getting back into shape and crushing the below times. Especially on the half, I recall running that with a friend and taking it VERY easy during that race. Looks like I'm putting the pressure on myself ;)

<colgroup><col style='width:213px'/><col style='width:213px'/><col style='width:213px'/></colgroup>

2007 Race

Pace

Time

5K

8:54

27:39

10K

9:20

57:55

Half Marathon

11:32

2:31:15

Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-8483968059861582562009-05-06T15:23:00.001-04:002009-05-06T15:43:31.563-04:00Defining My Training Zones
While I'm still getting up to speed on my heart rate monitor – I figured it'd be a good idea to outline my training zones. I'm optimistic that this will help me get into the aerobic shape that I'm aiming for. For now, that goal is simply, 'good'.

My Suunto automatically calculated my maximum heart rate to be at 192 and using other formulas 210 – (50% of Age) – (1% of weight) I've come up with an alternative 195 number. I'll just use the higher of the two ;)

With the help of a great Runnersworld article, my training zones appear to be the following:

Easy Run (recovery zone) – 127 to 136
Pace: One to two minutes slower than marathon pace
% Max heart rate: 65 to 70%
Perceived Effort: 3 to 4/easy
Talk Test: Complete conversation

Training Run (aerobic zone) – 146 to 166
Pace: Marathon pace or slightly slower
% Max heart rate: 75 to 85%
Perceived Effort: 5 to 6/moderate
Talk Test: Full sentences

Tempo Run (threshold zone) – 172 to 179
Pace: 20 to 30 seconds slower than 5-K pace
% Max heart rate: 88 to 92%
Perceived Effort: 7 to 8/hard
Talk Test: A few words at a time

Intervals (VO2 max zone) – 185 to 195
Pace: Mile to 5-K pace or faster
% Max heart rate: 95 to 100%
Perceived Effort: 9/very hard
Talk Test: Can't...talk...must...run...

See here for the original article: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--12397-0,00.html

Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-74359969774913921972009-05-05T17:46:00.001-04:002009-05-06T15:42:36.047-04:00Getting the Numbers Right
I fumbled around with my Suunto heart rate monitor this morning leaving me just enough time to squeeze in a quick 2-miler. Actually, I didn't even realize that I was supposed to run 2.5 miles today but whatever, I'll make that up.

I may have to recalibrate my foot pod but it looks like my numbers haven't been right so far – probably since I've been using an old treadmill. Fortunately, the weather is AMAZING enough so that I can get outside a few days a week when I'm not home alone with Anna in the morning

Stats:

2 miles

9:43 average Pace

19:23 time

Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-9035435481892739392009-05-03T23:05:00.000-04:002009-05-04T10:11:14.882-04:00Short Long RunCompleted my long run of the week and I'm pleased that I've stuck with my training program to the tee for the past two weeks.

Despite the constant looming disappointment of lack of speed and fitness I have to say that I'm pleased that I'm making progress and that more importantly, I'm sticking to a plan.

Would like to develop an Annual Training Plan to keep me focused year round but am afraid to get ahead of myself. For now, I'm planning on running my on private 10K (location TBD ;) at the end of this 8 week training program but more importantly, I'd like to work my way up to training a comfortable 20 mpw.

Long-run stats today:

3.5 Miles
39:23 Time
11:20 Avg PaceMiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-54590511725031139322009-05-02T12:15:00.001-04:002009-05-15T18:05:26.480-04:00Part II - Making a ComebackIt's been a year since I've last used this blog. A great example of the back and forth that I've had with running. For the past couple of months, I've struggled with my weight, fitness and general dilemma of hitting the freakin' pavement. Despite amazing strides and happiness in other areas of my life, things haven't been as holistic as I'd like.

Today, I'm optimistic.

Two weeks ago, I started Hal Higdon's 10K training program. On the one hand, it's been humbling assessing my current fitness level but on the other hand, I'm pleased with the progress I've been making. Aside from feeling great, I've already managed to drop a few pounds - shedding the winter blubber if you will.

Since I was absent from the blogsphere for the major part of 2008, here's the recap:
- I got engaged in August 2008
- I graduated from the University of Michigan
- I started a new dream job in Cleantech
- I also became a commuter & got a car - a Toyota Matrix we named, Neo :)
- I became a home owner
- I got the CUTEST golden retriever puppy for my birthday
- ...and I barely ran

Now, as I mentioned above, I'm back at it. I'm taking on the push-up challenge, watching my calories, squeezing in yoga every now and again, paying attention to runner-centric ab workouts and finding a healthy work/life balance. Oh, and I'm trying to be a good little wedding planner (:

Last week's quickie recap:
Run(Planned)7.50 mi
Run(Actual)7.50 mi
XC-Ski(Planned)0:30:00
XC-Ski(Actual)0:30:00
Walk(Planned)0:40:00
Walk(Actual)3:45:00Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-63406126632058198272008-06-21T17:19:00.000-04:002008-06-21T17:28:51.043-04:00Live MoreA much needed morning run reminded me that life is indeed, very good.

So far, this summer has been one filled with many transitions not the least of which is my transition into the for-profit business world. Long hours and an upcoming busy travel schedule has stumped my ability to squeeze in some physical activity but when I do, I am GRATEFUL.

The Ann Arbor hills were reminiscent of life's many ups and downs. With each painful hill, I enjoyed the thrill of the climb and the satisfaction of reaching the top. The downhills restful though, ephemeral. And in between the two, the flats forced notice to my breathing and the crunching of the trail beneath me.

Blue skies, rich, green trees and I noted yet another existential run...Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-30188246759498451032008-04-29T21:01:00.000-04:002008-04-29T21:49:18.126-04:00My Endless LoveDay two in the Philippines and I decide to drag myself out of bed at 5:45am and squeeze in a quick run before it got too hot. At 82 degrees Fahrenheit, it was balmy, to say the least.

Prepared for another appeal to my spiritual side, I sank deep into thought about theism and its possible role in my life. My airplane reading material was a dense book on Tibetan Buddhism. Determined to explore more ways to temper my penchant for anxiety and seemingly endless quest for staying centered, I figured, apart from running what the hell else can I do to relax my racing mind?!? ;)

This morning, I was reminded of the power of comedy.

Along the Marikina riverbank, I came across a father and his two sons. Slim and fit, Dad ran along side one son and pushed the other along. Each was 'healthy' and the older son was NOT so thrilled about the forced outing. He kept falling behind and I decided to run with him (see below, the boy in the blue shirt)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuANTEoEAdMzYuhxG37kI8jxcOkVNxx1EEJ81QaEuLf56bpSLeGnywVPGyZlYHljrHNQKsWr7eC9Za1GR5KNHXSq4FfygHtYPBVQzHNQuca7OHllN8kGgDjJuCrdYRLjDhVczE5gSKC04/s320/IMG_7689.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194841950456459170" />

To be sure, the sight of this father and his two sons was comedy in and of itself. But instead of sharing a private laugh and moving along, I asked the father where they planned on meeting ending their run and that I would just meet him there with his son. It probably wasn't the best idea to leave his son alone with the likes of someone like me, but ever the trusting Filipino man, he did.

Me: So, let's just jog, ok? And feel free to walk whenever you're tired. Sound ok?
Boy: I hate running.
Me: I don't blame you, I didn't like it too much either when I was your age. Do you play any sports?
Boy: No.
Me: Hmm, wanna switch iPods? Either that or we can just chat if you'd like...
Boy: My god, you're so white. Why are you out running?? You'll get dark!
Me: *rolls eyes*

Before I hand over my iPod, I switch it up to one of my favorite playlists...an old school Rocky and other random hip hop playlist that gets the heart pumping. Here kid, I think to myself, if this doesn't get your ass movin' I don't know what will!

Meanwhile, when I throw on his headphones, I discover a dark truth: this kid has been hanging out with too many Karaoke crazed, middle aged Filipinos. He was listening to non other than MY ENDLESS LOVE! When I look at him, he eeks out a grin and asks, "what"?

All I could do was laugh at the audacity of trying to run with such a song. So, I asked the inevitable - Are you listening to My Endless Love because of your girlfriend?!

He responds, "I'm listening to My Endless Love because I don't have a girlfriend...the girl I like doesn't even know I'm alive."

I thought, buck up, kid, you should stay away from us until you're about thirty. Thanks for the good time, though!

By the time I dropped him off, his Dad appeared pretty hell bent on taking me home and introducing me to his eldest son...although I declined the possibility of meeting my endless love, I definitely achieved some semblance of "center" hanging out with my boy in blue!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgenIi08wULfA1bVfbeUKDqeA86mytH_ehfSUgqSmuF4NZRb9k63dP02H-HrMwARtCtORgqAUyNtJDQiHakom_gp2yIvG0WEPLtWTocNNV22iLBK1zZacPtlT42S9RkayHWd8IwwloCbzs/s320/IMG_7690.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194848543231258546" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgldJXseuo01JMylj29Ii5g1FDRIda8DC-OTcY_A7PAJaZjABsu2jXosivpZ4s9bdIY38q-A20eY-7UGe8_ulbL9yoVhJnUFrYW19HcvobpaKk3PnrZj3qU9rH-XVR3ZacMolmZhM2Mk8M/s320/IMG_7691.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194849204656222146" />Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-56401396767853550162008-04-27T09:02:00.000-04:002008-04-27T09:13:25.063-04:00Leg OneI am happily on my first international trip of 2008...despite the madness of this past weekend and my sleepy droopy eyes, I'm sitting in the O'Hare airport sipping coffee and reveling in my upcoming 5 week vacation. That's right, kids: 5 weeks.

This blog has been empty of entries for the past four months and the fact that I have taken a job in the private sector starting on June 2nd should basically say it all. I am in a wonderful phase of transition and I am embracing the change.

Stay tuned for updates...even running ones! I'm planning on running the Dexter Ann Arbor again on June 1st, hopefully injury free :)

Cheers to sass and cocktails :)Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-10503698759025391272008-01-08T12:32:00.000-05:002008-01-08T12:52:55.292-05:00The New Year2007 has come and gone quickly, as usual. It's been a year that I can sum up, however, with many learning moments on career choices, academics, parenthood and love -- all of which I hope to build on in the new year.

In 2007 Anna started pre-school, visited the Philippines for the first time and is growing into a loving, affectionate and clever (albeit very feisty) toddler. Her dream in 2008 is to begin pursuing her dream to be a 'ballereeeeeeeena.'

We have cherished the opportunity this year has given us to be near family; Anna has grown to adore her Tito, Tita and Lolo among many others including my close friends here in Ann Arbor and afar. I continue to be thankful for the loving community of people that surround us - a community, without which, I am sure life would be less enjoyable and definitely, more difficult.

I started running again in 2007 - I ran in a few 5Ks, ran the Ann Arbor Dexter 10K for the first time, and then of course, the Virginia Beach Half Marathon. The fall term, and other issues interfered with the consistency my training, but I'm learning to be ok with these dry spells. Such is life, and there is nothing stopping me from picking up and running again.

Now, of course, after the holidays I've got a little extra junk in my trunk but do not regret for one second, the 2.5 week vacation / lazy-ing around with Anna and eating YUMMY food, catching up on movies missed and a few nights out with my brother and old friends as a reward (as well as a much needed recuperation) from a difficult fall season.

I have much to look forward to in 2008. I'm going to diligently plan vacations, start a very exciting career in the private sector (whoooaaaa), run a few more races and spend more time with family and friends. I am most thankful for Anna of course, and the love that continues to grow exponentially, just when I think I couldn't love her any more.

Happy New Year to all!!Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-42784452527655788662007-11-15T11:18:00.000-05:002008-03-30T15:03:33.542-04:00Radio SilenceI have been a weekend runner for the past 2 to 3 weeks (it pains me to type it). Unfortunately, the reasons for this are also the reasons why I don't have much time to update this blog and revel in my fitness level.

My last run was over a week ago on an early and cold Monday morning around my neighborhood. A nice 3-miler at an 8:40 minute mile. Not too shabby. Since I've been sick all week, however, I'm pretty sure my next run will be painful.

Meanwhile, I'm in the throws of life in the ivory tower. I'm looking forward to the upcoming holiday when I get to meet up with some very dear old friends AND host Thanksgiving dinner for the first time ever. Wish me luck! And of course, I will be squeezing in the requisite Turkey Trot in there.

Happy running to all of you out there!

Peace and hair grease.Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-66643254901953184912007-10-16T12:29:00.000-04:002008-03-29T22:29:39.609-04:00A Moment of Respite<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3ummRltkIo0y0Gs0ImHmXQAlPRUfAkGXkfWnPhreGX9uV7L10Iloxd2PGGBMGJ27IK5gRaN555Z3vEnLGq1PjwELQWNJwiLR5rn_qjDXiH-F_modrBgPyw-viKdLpkH6pJUE1SbX0mKE/s320/IMG_7052.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123932144607388610" />
It's been hard to get those miles in, but the good news is that when I do, I'm loving my runs. I'm loving those moments when I can sink into a rhythm with mind and body working in tandem. Lately, it's been difficult for me to remain undisturbed by the tumult of life's events...at least this is not so when I run.

This long Fall Break weekend has been a much needed mental break and opportunity to treat my body to food (bad, I know) and some physical activity. I'm sitting in a coffee shop and using a second morning in a row to get ahead on some work and mentally erase the trauma of last week's exams.

I went to a display of homes in the area called Homerama and I was unrelenting in my critiques of the suburban, borderline pretentious homes that I have little desire to live in. But I suppose this is not the place to bash on the Desperate Housewives culture...though maybe it is; sign this petition if you haven't already.

I watched Michael Clayton, played tennis and ran the trails. It's been heavenly. But ohhh the trails. Went out on a quick three miler on the trails in First Landing State Park and it was so incredibly refreshing. I felt like a care-free child kid hoping over roots and bounding up and over the hills...Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-78427921758533927522007-10-02T12:37:00.000-04:002008-03-29T20:39:05.959-04:00It's a Tall Order...Logging a big fat ZERO miles last week explains much of my misery.

But no more.

It's a tall order, but I'm back on track and ran my scheduled 5-miler today at an easy 9:30 pace. It was overcast, cool and drizzly and it felt so good to let my mind wander and sweat away the day to day anxieties of a young woman unable to stay zen about Financial Mathematics. Seriously, what the eff am I doing?

Worried about jobs, staying sane for Anna, and possibly more school, it is imperative that I get those miles in. It's amazing how an investment of less than 60 minutes can yield such calm...hell, things don't seem so hectic right now. *sip coffee*

And you know what else I did? Pilates (pronounced PIE-LATES in my world ;). And that felt great too. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh-1c58lUQN-gutcdRB36IjbarG5s2jZtN07brxTXCa-9LsiBhhyphenhyphenkLjfTHgL2BALkE0sbaVtu9-8JaQlvaCWMHNhBOkdjuwDGVwsqDp24XLpl9krO3Hb1WcFwehi-5ci-kUW2N_LWECcY/s200/41T4YHEEYQL._AA280_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116782342614508466" /> I think this is the greatest fitness video (right).

Hangin' in there until October 13th.

Until I complete three midterms.

And vacation for 4 WHOLE DAYS!!! Thanks for the fall break UofM!! You're the greatest school EVER.

GO BLUE!Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-16863093798369594412007-09-30T13:37:00.000-04:002008-03-30T15:06:24.563-04:00In It DeepI'm overwhelmed.

Thank goodness for LCT's surprise visit last weekend. And thank goodness that for at two weeks in the term I've put in some decent mileage.

Weekly Distances
9/24/2007 — 9/30/2007: 0.0 Mi 0:00
9/17/2007 — 9/23/2007: 26.0 Mi 4:58:30
9/10/2007 — 9/16/2007: 24.0 Mi 4:05:40
9/3/2007 — 9/9/2007: 6.0 Mi 1:04:00
8/27/2007 — 9/2/2007: 18.5 Mi 3:23:58

You'll notice how I've done this past week - no comment - it's been crazy, folks. I guess I'm just not organized enough.

My last run was with LCT around the Ann Arbor Hills for a nice 11-miler. He basically hated me afterwards. Guess he couldn't handle it?! ;)Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-63977437438267531682007-09-17T11:56:00.000-04:002008-03-29T22:27:14.352-04:00Two Week UpdateSince the half-marathon at the beginning of the month, I've fallen back into a running schedule that I'm really happy with. My goal for now, is to build to a weekly mileage of 35mpw and then train for a winter or spring marathon.

The week after the race, I basically took it easy and let my body recover after the jolt of a 13.1 long run. So, the following Thursday and Friday of the race (Sept-6 and Sept-7), I ran an easy 3 miles on each day pushing Anna her jogging stroller. She weighs 31 pounds now so 'easy' is a relative term.

This past week, I completed 24mpw and it's been a confidence booster. I'm particularly pleased with the fact that the miles have not been stressful on my body and in fact, I feel fully comfortable with my ~10.7 mile long run yesterday. I completed it in 1:39:44. WOOT!

I'm taking advantage of runner's world new training log application and I'll post all of my miles up soon...

P.S. I found another running picture of Anna. Like, whoa.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipPYMqfiIeHER8yr2eFsbO30rAFUvyhHt7niBUnfsR9BQM7Sw59nq7ygFy6lUzsQZZrP_kJY40rlpKlDEjouwm9jCoczCJb-zQshHNpdbaP9MZae7POMzYJsHJCu8hjUKUkPHy08wNdnU/s400/IMG_6546.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5111206573528144882" />Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-73350690687337648812007-09-05T11:02:00.000-04:002008-03-30T18:24:38.905-04:00Rock 'N Roll Half MarathonWith all my belly aching about not having trained enough for this race, I forgot to get all the logistics of race day figured out. At 4:15 am, I was scrambling to get my Dad directions to and from the race. Not only that, but I wasn't prepared with my standard pre-race breakfast of half a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter and a banana.

A cup of coffee and a cliff bar had to do. But I wasn't happy about it. The whole morning I was filled with negative energy, feeling so disappointed that I wasn't going to race the race I had hoped for at the beginning of the summer. Nothing like a long run to shake that attitude but needless to say, I was pretty unpleasant.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6VyP2D5QkWeFA3T26KqmBDi3tH5mOpmx6OiSRJerHdmtAEmlrP3wfqZC1cHf5N-OzHFZTQ_rBHZPagp5RkE-3Ymoo37yFN2jTlbVSweH9nzHmMtHfLWzTiSbn5pA8Cxb4fIYyiGtITwo/s200/IMG_6914.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106740964756368098" /> I missed my corral start because of the long lines at the 'potties' but I guess it served me right since I was so incredibly ill prepared on race day morning. A fact that irritates me to this day.

I started off the race at a very leisurely 11 min/mil pace or so. And I took the whole race in. When my running buddy wanted to walk, I let him walk through the water stops.

We ran a 35:00 5K, 1:15:54 10K and 1:56:14 10 mile.

LEISURE.

What I learned, however, is that I make an awful running coach because I think I pushed LCT a little too hard in the beginning such that he needed to walk by mile 7. I pushed on thinking he would catch up as I maintained our pace and continued to walk through the water stops as well. Surprisingly around this point in the race, I was passing people left and right despite feeling as though I was jogging! And before you say, it, yes, I know I should have just hung back.

I crossed the finish line in 2:31:15 (my original goal was to finish under 2 hours). LCT crossed about 20 minutes later.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigJdWK6o3-Dv4wdwkBa_SrSc5ys7ePOZmAIkSOkgvyt8KPAkCDWkOzDZI-KHPWh1JdiTR8k8IMvXGi1gXgOvRh9rqUz5BZmIxKEnDtM_QfQXS0UmzT4OPsADuku_hKzd8poFBzn5pmGF8/s200/IMG_6930.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107137541460183170" />

It was a good time. It was great not to run in the humidity that was life in Asia for the past two months. And it was great to have my Dad come down and cheer along side little Anna while I managed to run an injury free 13.1 miles.Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-1021692831387186052007-08-30T10:19:00.000-04:002008-03-29T22:26:55.176-04:00Gearing Up<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiu-nS4NezQJkKrqp9Tn_vdiz3mAQy7wjgTq0drvazMh6Xu_epY8oueMjMZA16Ys2wzISg2UPY4G39EbGFJZ6RRdTysBsMkwsg3LBL9FHqEBfKm_yHkGjTg2sQQ_AyFswo3I_ECCmuQPY/s200/IMG_6756.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104500297497914002" />It seems like there's no better way to end the summer than with a <a href-"http://www.rnrhalf.com/home.html">half-marathon. Despite the pain and inevitable humbling-experience, I'll be starting the new academic year with a 'bang', so to speak. Stay tuned.

I'll save it for a later post, but there is much to reflect on from these past couple of months. Needless to say, I am so grateful to have been back in Asia. The upcoming months and anticipation of big changes in my life is very exciting. Meanwhile, I'll bask in my being 'centered' for the first time in a while and make sure I exercise heroic time management skills :)

Here's a summary of my summer miles:

August: 27.9 Mi 4:29:59 hours
July: 18.5 Mi 2:55:17 hours
June: 50.9 Mi 7:52:08 hours
May: 58.1 Mi 10:47:32 hours

I can't wait to start catching up on my fellow running bloggers...thanks for keeping track of me, guys!

*Sending my best to all you fall marathoners*

P.S. Anna is about 2.5 years now and it's amazing that I can already predict a few of her future interests. She's a natural musician and dancer. *Shock* My musician brother is always impressed by her ability to sing songs in tune and how quickly she can pick up melodies in general.

Of course, she sees me run and play soccer so she's influenced by example :)

Take a look at my little runner.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2rtsnnEGAKfmBKukYym_yJebMSADcerS-Bp6Nmp3BgUFV3AcUytUPldmgb9r4Aer-xMYxn7EimEk-ttTfMAAdFcyEHgeIfKqYOlZgFxsMDItBWO_95LNGGIKUbbxUU8b-k2Oglbc6UYI/s400/IMG_6827.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104538758930049698" />Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8755399157924594163.post-41800413015492372232007-08-12T09:17:00.000-04:002008-03-29T22:26:41.427-04:00Hang Over<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRRnb_6wEH0alAIWTuQc19F6hjg1LHtK6ggua9fQ_y-7Kmx74HVAd9rykOxqIul4rSlkn45FrvmpNFgSkzYzdW2TNED1gPzOiKhlTWwlPSSLMaUkyoEitsGOzlqUCAhMsHMIGg8J8nEN8/s200/IMG_6625.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099658645289642594" />
To the left is a picture of our friends in San Pablo City, Laguna. NJ was a Fulbright fellow here in Michigan so of course, we had to go visit them on their stomping grounds. This picture was taken during the day -- before our day's adventure of white water rafting in Pagsanjan Falls. And BEFORE our night of debauchery.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaEcfo02s4OUNn5_X4tQr4njFP5MGVpeuLUciq5zh_PGLNSbUw2Oww5dzZk5SpCelU38tbODO9FjmRtFuKKiV1_V8N95vCaqQM2_GSI10G7y-_B6aITUTQkBe0wwV6-uaLVMfvrMtBEHI/s320/Ph_locator_laguna_san_pablo.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099660006794275442" />

It was my first time in San Pablo though I've been to Pagsanjan when I was younger. It's an out and back trip so you can just imagine what it's like to shoot UP the rapids. If you've never gone white water rafting Filipino syle, you AIN'T NEVER gone white water rafting...let's just say our guides are marathon ready and fearless. Either way, it's a beautiful trip and as usual, I took crazy pictures.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTc_5tECPgf6qOgVP6zX6-vevJGqcLKfZeaGzMX3a0RBTrG4jA-Eke8lkQlkjH1LIYxUcBi_dF-Ylg9xYGpNwN5vuTygVA4ug6xX2FbxUZ2Fa-QfMuD_BZZme_TijW1Q4Ki-5efRAsJk/s200/IMG_6652.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099663253789551234" />
In the evening, we had more drinks than I've had all year at a very cute pub in downtown San Pablo. It turns out, after talking up the bartender/owner that the beautiful ambiance is due to his artistic filmmaker sensibilities. Good thing I noticed right away otherwise, I could have been in a dingy basement drinking and it wouldn't have mattered.

Of course it made sense to us to go for a run the next morning to 'sweat off the alcohol.' So, JJ took me on his 12K route around one of the seven lakes in San Pablo. It was beautiful. (Painful, but beautiful.)

He dragged me around at an 8:30 min/mil and was kind about all my complaining. Hey, the guy runs 40mpw! I doubt I've run 30 miles in the past month...

Good times. It was a great way to end my trip in Laguna. After hitting the showers, we headed back to Manila...Miahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05238329516138209200noreply@blogger.com3
